Fairy Pools

Having arrived safely on the island we made our way to our first place of interest to visit - the Fairy Pools.

The Fairy Pools are a natural waterfall phenomenon in Glen Brittle on the Isle of Skye, on the Allt Coir' a' Mhadaidh. The pools are a vivid aqua blue and are a popular place for wild swimmers who brave the frigid waters. We had fully intended to be among the growing number of swimmers, but chickened out on the day, due to there being too many people about for us to get our clothes off!

The story behind the Fairy Pools says that a local Clan MacLeod chief, of old, married a fairy princess, giving rise to many fairy place names on the Isle of Skye. It is also said that Fairy Pools attracted selkies. These mythological creatures, disguised as large seals during the day, would come to the beach at the foot of Glen Brittle where they would shed their skins and change into human form for the night, to bathe in the pools under the light of a full moon - maybe that's when we should have tried our swim, at night...

It was a long trek from the car park to the last pool. Our little one managed to walk nearly the whole way there and back, which was doubly impressive as it was over rather rough terrain. Mind you he was constantly on his wrist strap, as there was no way we would let him "loose" near so much water.

The walk was good, if a little hard work due to the loose slate they have put down to maintain the pathways. It was akin to walking on the beach and a bit of a struggle at times, but well worth it.

One of the things that is evident, when taking photos of all the wonderful places we have been, is how difficult it is to get our little one to "pose" for the camera!

Looking after someone with autism (amongst other things), can be quite difficult at times, which we live with, but sometimes it is the little things that strike you the most - like sitting for family pictures and having a child that looks anywhere but at the camera (phone). We do, occasionally, by accident capture moments when he looks, but what the heck - he is there, and hopefully enjoying the moment - who cares if he is looking at the camera?
